CHICAGO, Oct. 18, 2011 – Finding information and conducting research on the Internet can be overwhelming and intimidating. Find Info Like a Pro, Volume 2: Mining the Internet’s Public Records for Investigative Research, a new book published by the American Bar Association Law Practice Management Section, helps all professionals – not just lawyers – conduct effective research on the Internet.

This complete hands-on guide focuses on using public records that are filed and stored with government agencies as a source for investigative research. The book reveals the secrets, shortcuts, and realities of conducting investigative and background research using these free and low-cost public records available on the Internet (and from fee-based databases). Written for all business professionals, including lawyers, this resource describes how to use hundreds of government and non-government Internet sites to uncover public records.

Any business professional can use the resources and techniques in Find Info Like a Pro to conduct background investigations on potential employees or business partners, identify and research competitive products, or locate missing clients. Legal professionals can use these resources and techniques to locate missing witnesses, clients or heirs; identify potential clients in target industries; and prepare for deposition or trial, among other specialized research challenges.

Find Info Like a Pro, Volume 2 will help you:

Determine      where to begin your search by introducing meta-sites that help you quickly      find public record sites;

Decide      when to use fee-based databases instead of (or in addition to) free sites;

Find      addresses for service of process;

Unearth      assets – real and personal property;

Discover      political persuasions;

Obtain      vital records, criminal records, liens, judgments and UCCs;

Uncover      background information about people (and companies) via docket, case law      and corporate record research;

Locate      occupational licenses;

Understand the difference between credit reports and credit headers and how and when you can obtain each – legally.

Volume 1 in the series focused on using the publicly available information on the Internet such as social networking sites, blogs, and news sources to conduct similar types of research.

Both volumes of the Find Info Like a Pro series include a CD-ROM that features clickable links to all of the sites contained in each respective book.

Authors Carole Levitt and Mark Rosch, principals of Internet For Lawyers (IFL; http://www.netforlawyers.com), are nationally acclaimed speakers and authors who focus on Internet research and social networking for lawyers. In addition to the Find Info Like a Pro series, they have co-authored three other books, Google for Lawyers, The Cybersleuth’s Guide to the Internet and The Lawyer’s Guide to Fact Finding on the Internet. Levitt and Rosch present continuing legal education seminars on these topics throughout the United States. Levitt practiced law in California, taught legal research and writing at Pepperdine Law School, and was a law librarian in Chicago and Los Angeles. In addition to speaking and writing, Rosch is the developer and manager of IFL’s website and blog and more recently, IFL’s Facebook Fan page. He also tweets about legal technology and Internet research.

CHICAGO, Sept. 29, 2011 – The American Bar Association Law Practice Management Section has published Careers in Animal Law, the first book of its kind on employment related to the legal welfare of animals. Beyond an ordinary career guide, the book not only provides an overview of this relatively new area of law practice, but also shares important trends and cases now shaping the field.

Animal law concerns the protection and improvement of the lives of animals through city ordinances, state and federal laws, international treaties, and cases, and is one of the fastest growing legal disciplines. More than 100 law schools in the United States now offer animal law courses, and more lawyers than ever before are looking to start animal law firms or incorporate animal cases into their practices. The book will help lawyers:

Gain an overview of the field from a practicing      animal lawyer and professor of animal law;

Forge a successful animal law career with firms      of all types and sizes, government agencies, major corporations and nonprofit      organizations;

Strike out on their own as a solo practitioner of      animal law;

Learn career tips from a series of animal-lawyer profiles; and

Understand evolving trends in legislation, litigation and academia that will change the face of animal law in the decades to come.

The guide is written by Yolanda Eisenstein, a lawyer with an animal law practice, the
Eisenstein Law Office, in Dallas. She is also an adjunct professor in animal law at Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law.

The ABA Law Practice Management Section is a professional membership organization providing resources for lawyers and other legal professionals in the core areas of the business of practicing law – marketing, management, technology, and finance – through its award-winning magazine, webzines, educational CLE programs, website and publishing division. For more than 30 years, LPM has established itself as a leader within the legal profession by producing ABA TECHSHOW, the world’s premier legal technology conference and expo, and through its publishing arm, which has more than 90 titles in print.

CHICAGO, Sept. 9, 2011 – As the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks approaches, the American Bar Association Section of Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice has published The Law of Counterterrorism, a book that examines the recent pre-emptive measures that government agencies have taken to respond to transnational terrorism.

The book examines in detail the roles federal agencies play, the highly esoteric nature of counterterrorism law and the importance of adhering to the rule of law when engaged in counterterrorism.

Multiple authors examine several topics, including the war in Afghanistan, the Taliban and al-Qaeda; the Department of Justice torture memo; the U.S. government’s philosophy of terrorism; war crimes jurisdiction; the 9/11 Commission; current and future national security principles; the National Security Act and intelligence community reform; the National Counterterrorism Center; the organization and structure of the intelligence community; the National Security Council system; communications surveillance; the USA PATRIOT Act; and more.

The 12 contributing authors approach their topics from a range of perspectives. New York City Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly relies on the principles of the law while overseeing the efforts of more than 1,000 police officers assigned to counterterrorism duties. W. Hays Parks spent most of his career in the Marine Corps in such assignments as a legal advisor on terrorism-related military tactics; an investigator of war crimes committed when Iraq invaded Kuwait; a U.S. representative for law of war negotiations in New York, Geneva, The Hague and Vienna; and chair of the Department of Defense Law of War Working Group. Others among the book’s dozen authors are from such diverse backgrounds as lawyers in the federal government, teachers of law and congressional staffers.

According to Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, The Law of Counterterrorism is “a timely and valuable contribution. Decision-makers and legal professionals who are grappling with the complexities of international counterterrorism law will appreciate this important resource.”

Similar praise is echoed by Stephen L. Purcell, chief judge, Office of Administrative Law Judges, U.S. Department of Labor. “This book is an invaluable resource that should be on the desk of every legislator, congressional staffer, agency decision-maker, intelligence operative, law enforcement officer, and private or government attorney who has any responsibility for, or interest in, the war on terrorism,” he said.

With nearly 400,000 members, the American Bar Association is the largest voluntary professional membership organization in the world. As the national voice of the legal profession, the ABA works to improve the administration of justice, promotes programs that assist lawyers and judges in their work, accredits law schools, provides continuing legal education, and works to build public understanding around the world of the importance of the rule of law.

CHICAGO, June 24, 2011 – An understanding of insurance as a tool to manage, transfer and finance risk of construction projects is critical for lawyers representing the range of parties involved in such ventures. A new book, published by the American Bar Association Forum on the Construction Industry, Construction Insurance: A Guide for Attorneys and Other Professionals, examines the intersection of law and construction.

This new handbook for construction lawyers was written by practitioners with considerable expertise in both construction and insurance. The book provides overviews of individual construction insurance topic areas in each chapter, chosen because of their relevance to construction lawyers.

Construction Insurance: A Guide for Attorneys and Other Professionals begins with an introduction to basic insurance and related construction delivery concepts, and discusses insurance-related contract drafting considerations. Six subsequent chapters examine each of the basic insurance products typically used for construction, with an emphasis on their place in the construction context – commercial general liability insurance, builders risk, professional liability insurance and pollution insurance. There is a chapter on the related concepts of construction contract indemnities and additional insured coverage in commercial general liability policies, and another covering performance bonds and contractor default insurance.

In addition, readers will find valuable information on special insurance considerations, the “wrap-up” insurance model and how this kind of program works, and the insurance claims process in the course of construction. Finally, there is a detailed discussion of coverage for delay-related damages under three types of insurance coverage and through performance bonds. Each chapter also provides a list of resources for further reading. The book is intended for anyone involved in the construction field who needs a complete resource on construction insurance.

The American Bar Association Forum on the Construction Industry is the largest organization of construction lawyers in the United States and abroad. Its 6,000 members are drawn from all areas of practice: large law firms, small firms, solo practitioners, government lawyers and corporate in house counsel. Members represent all segments of the construction industry: owners, design professionals, general contractors, construction managers, subcontractors, suppliers, insurers and sureties. The Forum’s mission is to serve the construction industry through education and leadership. The Forum sponsors several seminars each year on different topics. A governing committee elected by the membership guide the Forum’s activities.

CHICAGO, May 26, 2011 – The American Bar Association Commission on Mental and Physical Disability Law has published Lawyers, Lead On: Lawyers with Disabilities Share Their Insights to help students, new lawyers, allies and employers better understand people with disabilities and reimagine the legal profession from the standpoint of disability.

People with disabilities are profoundly underrepresented in the legal profession. While they only represent an estimated 10 percent of the law school population, the percentage of legal professionals with disabilities is even lower. Disabled law students and attorneys must cope with a wide range of employment barriers, including stereotyping, limited professional opportunities, and concerns about disclosure of disability, hiring, promotion and retention.

Written by lawyers with disabilities, the book is an inspiring collection of their letters of encouragement and advice to the next generation of legal professionals. It features authors with a range of experiences that honor different perspectives on work and disability, including people with non-apparent disabilities, people of color, women, LGBT lawyers, older lawyers and others. Their moving stories help foster a cross-disability community and offer hope and encouragement to students, young lawyers and all who face adversity in the legal profession.

Lawyers, Lead On begins with the transition to law school, which presents unique hurdles for people with disabilities. Two of the five authors in this section – an established lawyer and a law professor – recount the challenges they faced as blind students, and the successes they achieved. Others take on the topics of mental health, diminished mobility and cerebral palsy.

Five subsequent chapters discuss disability and disclosure, disability identity, the foundation of a meaningful career, awareness building in the profession and reflections on the disability rights movement.

In addition, the book includes an index to experiences discussed in the authors’ letters. These are arranged by category: type of disability, socio-cultural and work.

The American Bar Association Commission on Mental and Physical Disability Law was established in 1973 to respond to the advocacy needs of persons with mental disabilities. After the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the ABA broadened the Commission’s mission to serve all persons with disabilities. Today, the Commission carries out an array of projects and activities addressing disability-related public policy, disability law, and the professional needs of lawyers and law students with disabilities.
