Leading In-House Lawyers Find Way to Make Alternative Fees Work

    Corporate Counsel

Four top in-house lawyers say that alternative billing has become a reality for them, even though many law firms have been slow to pick up on the idea. But they agreed that a firm must receive a steady pipeline of work from its client for their interests to be aligned. The lawyers — general counsel Thomas Sager of E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, GC Amy Schulman of Pfizer, general counsel Joseph West of Wal-Mart Stores, and GC Murray Garnick of Altria Client Services — spoke on a panel at the American Bar Association’s midyear meeting in Atlanta earlier this year. They were joined by David Boies, the chairman of Boies, Schiller & Flexner.

    Alfred Levitt

    Baltimore City Paper

As the country marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, and all the big stories it entails, the aftermath of the Lincoln assassination, one of the lesser-known stories from that era, gets the Robert Redford treatment in theaters this week. … The American Bar Association had a great panel discussion about this. The theme of the panel was, ‘In times of war, do the laws fall silent?’ It was incredibly thought-provoking. . . . I think there are important parallels and I think the audience will inevitably find those, but for us it was this personal story.

    iPhone JD

This weekend I’m headed to Chicago for ABA TECHSHOW 2011, and I look forward to meeting and catching up with lots of iPhone J.D. readers.  I first attended in 2008 when I spoke about preparing a law firm for disasters (something near and dear to those of us in New Orleans who lived through Hurricane Katrina) and about using a Mac to practice law when your law firm uses PCs.

This week marks the 25th Birthday/Silver Anniversary of the ABA TECHSHOW in Chicago which runs from April 11- April 13 at the Chicago Hilton. TECHSHOW is sponsored by the American Bar Association’s Law Practice Management (LPM) section. Having gone to the show for about the past 10 years, I have to say this particular event is always one of the highlights of my year. 3 – 2 – 1 – ABA Techshow is Ignited

    Explorations with Information and Technology

This is the 25th year of the ABA Techshow.  I went to my first show in the early 1990s and it was where I first learned about how lawyers were using technology.  It was also where I found out that the American Bar Association had a Legal Technology Resource Center, the director of which I became about 10 years later! Last night was the first IgniteLaw event I had attended.  It leads off this year’s Techshow, which starts today.  The event was hosted by LexThink and InsideLegal.”
