ABA President Lamm’s Statement on Violence in Kyrgyz Republic

ABA President Carolyn B. Lamm
The American Bar Association urges cessation of violence in the Kyrgyz Republic and restoration of the rule of law. The interim government should protect all citizens from further attack, and the United Nations and other relevant intergovernmental organizations should provide to the Kyrgyz Republic the support necessary to de-escalate the violence and stabilize affected regions. We also urge the international community to promptly provide humanitarian assistance to the victims and to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice consistent with international due process standards.
The ABA has a longstanding commitment to advancing human rights and the rule of law, including in the Kyrgyz Republic, where it has helped develop rule of law institutions since 1993. We extend to our members and their families and friends in the Kyrgyz legal community, and to the people of the Kyrgyz Republic, our condolences and support during this difficult period. We stand ready to assist in whatever way we can to ensure that the rule of law is once again respected.
