Genetic Testing as Preventive Medicine?

Back in 2001, Joanna Rudnick seemingly had it all. She was a rising star as a television producer and looked forward to marriage and children. But, after testing positive for the BRCA breast cancer gene, her life turned upside down.

With an 85 percent chance of developing breast cancer and a 65 percent chance of getting ovarian cancer, Rudnick was forced to make the heart-breaking decision whether to remove her breasts and ovaries as a preventive measure. She chronicled her struggle in “Is It in My Family? One Woman’s Journey Through Genetic Testing,” an award-winning documentary that will be screened on July 31, 3:45 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. The screening will include a discussion on the complex health issues surrounding genetic testing.

Additionally, the Section of Health Law is hosting a “Breast Cancer Advocacy Workshop” to provide an introduction and overview of the common legal problems faced by patients of breast cancer. This panel will be held July 30, 2 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.
