Disability Discrimination Law, Evidence and Testimony: A Comprehensive Reference Manual for Lawyers, Judges and Disability Law Professionals

By John Parry

CHICAGO, Aug. 21, 2008 – The most recent report from the U.S. Census Bureau reveals that more than 32 million people in the United States have severe disabilities, representing more than 10 percent of all Americans. That number jumps to more than 50 million – about 18 percent of the population – when people with less severe impairments are added. Despite the high percentage of people with significant impairments and the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990, crucial problems of disability rights remain, including income, employment, college education and health insurance.

The American Bar Association Commission on Mental and Physical Disability Law has published a new resource that offers comprehensive information and insight on disability discrimination laws to help minimize current problems while creating better legal remedies. Disability Discrimination Law, Evidence and Testimony: A Comprehensive Reference Manual for Lawyers, Judges and Disability Law Professionals analyzes key aspects of disability discrimination law from several perspectives to guide lawyers through the different federal and state statutes, court cases and other regulations that may apply, in whole or in part, to each particular discrimination issue.

“This book builds on the 30 years of experience that the ABA has invested in publishing the Mental and Physical Disability Law Reporter to cover in a comprehensive manner all the important aspects of both federal and state disability discrimination laws.” says Alex Hurder, Clinical Professor of Law, Vanderbilt University Law School, and chair of the commission.

Written by commission director John Parry, who has more than 30 years experience with disability discrimination, the book features knowledge accumulated in the many publications the commission has produced since 1976. It also serves as a companion resource to Mental Disability Law, Evidence and Testimony published in 2007.

Divided into 14 sections, Disability Discrimination Law, Evidence and Testimony includes appendices of relevant Supreme Court decisions, charts of the statutory law governing employment, public services, public accommodations and housing, table of cases and index.
