South Dakota Judge David R. Gienapp is New Member of ABA Board of Governors
CHICAGO, Aug. 14, 2007 – David R. Gienapp of Madison, presiding judge of the Third Judicial Circuit, took office today for a three-year term as a member of the Board of Governors of the American Bar Association. His term began at the conclusion of the ABA Annual Meeting in San Francisco.
As governor of the ABA’s 10th District, Gienapp will represent South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming and Nebraska. The board meets at least four times yearly to oversee administration and management of the association.
Judge Gienapp was admitted to the U.S. Court of Claims in 1990 and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1982. He is also a member of the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Gienapp has been a member of the ABA House of Delegates since 1996. He is past president of the South Dakota State Bar Association, and has served in numerous positions in the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Association. In addition, Gienapp is a fellow with the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, the American Board of Criminal Lawyers and the American Bar Foundation, to name only a few.
Gienapp has served extensively as a lecturer, including at CLE courses for the State Bar of South Dakota, the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Mock Trial for the University of South Dakota Law School and as an instructor at the South Dakota Trial Academy.
Gienapp received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Wyoming School of Law and obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Dakota. Serving on the board of the Karl E. Mundt Foundation and as a member of the South Dakota Board of Regents are among Gienapp’s activities outside of the Third Circuit.
