YLD’s 06-07 Service Project: Choose Law
Although advances have been made in recent years, individuals of color continue to be underrepresented in the legal profession. The Young Lawyers Division of the American Bar Association is committed to increasing diversity in the legal profession by assisting and encouraging high school students to pursue a career in law. Its Choose Law: A Profession for All initiative utilizes a video, a written guide, a colorful Web site and lawyer volunteers to teach ninth-grade students of color the importance of the legal profession, focusing on how the law affects all aspects of their lives. Choose Law: A Profession for All was officially kicked off at YLD’s Fall Meeting in Baltimore, October 19 – 21, 2006.
The mission of the Young Lawyers Division, as the national organization of young lawyers, is to provide leadership in serving the public and the profession, and to promote excellence and fulfillment in the practice of law. Its public service initiatives are used by both affiliated organizations that duplicate the programs in their own communities, as well as individual young lawyers.
