Statement Re: The Death of Chief Justice William Rehnquist

September 4, 2005 – The American Bar Association is saddened by the death of Chief Justice William Rehnquist, whose leadership, intelligence and integrity shaped the Supreme Court of the United States for more than three decades.  His passionate defense of an independent judiciary, which he appropriately called the “crown jewel” of our system of government, and his strong advocacy for adequate resources to support the vital role of the judiciary in our republic, reflect the noblest principles that guide our nation.
